There are lots of good reasons to conduct board training. Among the more obvious are:
Your Board may have been in existence for a while, but they have never received any formal training on the responsibilities of being an Economic Development Board
You have new Board/members—many of whom have never served on a board
You have just experienced a significant turnover of Board members
You have just formed the Board
Your Board has been experiencing commitment, conflict and trust issues which are major challenges of many Boards.
“The workshop covered all of the Economic Development areas in a coherent and simple manner. Rolf’s way of presenting what is usually passed as a complex idea was simple, informative and very effective. This course should be a requirement for all EcDev Boards & Chief & Council of every First Nation.” Nick Paradisis-Chief Financial Officer Ouje Bougoumou Eenou Company – Quebec

If you bring in somebody completely from outside, the slate is clean so that an outside facilitator can ask questions – even the dumbest, most obvious questions – but they come clean and it’s amazing what people will tell them and what people will share.
There’s also inevitably no hidden agenda, people don’t know them, they don’t know how to react; it’s a different situation. There’s no history.
In addition we have valuable experience to contribute having worked with other Nation’s and organizations.

Let me ask you a few questions so you can decide if a Team Building Workshop or Assessment is of value to you?
Is there an absence of trust between the members of your team?
Is there conflict and do team members often avoid conflict?
Is there a lot of blaming, complaining and excusing happening?
Do they demonstrate a lack of commitment?
Is there an avoidance of accountability?
Is there inattention to results?
Is there a lack of motivation?
Is timeliness or lateness an issue?
Is there a lack of appreciation of each team member?
Do some members of your team have limited or poor communication skills?
Is there a lot of pressure on your team from outside forces?
Are you experiencing difficulty in delivering your service in a timely and cost effective way?
If your organization experiences some or all of the above there is a very high hidden cost associated with these issues. Team members may devote 40% of their time (and often higher) to the above, such as time spent in conflict, wasting time, procrastinating or being late and missing opportunities. These costs are not always seen like paying the rent but are just as real.
